{the colors of happiness} the circus

Do you remember, when you were little, and the circus arrived in town? My siblings and I could barely contain our excitement looking at those colorful posters that told us that the circus would be there soon. I lived in a small village in Western France, waaaaay out in the countryside, so we never had any big circus in town – most of them had a camel and two lamas tops, haha . But it didn’t matter, because entering that dark tent and waiting for the clowns to step in was just magical. A few months ago I read Water for Elephants (so good!), and it got my little grown-up head spinning about the circus. I can’t wait for my little girls to be old enough so they too can step in this wonderful universe. How about you, any fun circus memories from when you were a child?

  1. You post comes at a good time. I’ve never been to the circus but I’m going to see Cirque de Soleil on Friday! I’m probably feeling the same excitement that you and your sisters did!

  2. one of my favorite children’s book was Madeline, there’s this particular story of her running away with the circus. So of course whenever the circus came to town, when I was a little girl I’d imagine I were Madeline, however my mother was quick to catch me before I had the chance to run towards the back of the tents!!!

This is such a great story – too cute!!! With a daughter named Madeline, you’d think I would already have already read the stories to her many times – but we don’t even have the book! Now I heard your story, I’m definitely getting it!

I remember, I remember! I totally agree that when you enter a circus, no matter how big or small, you feel like you’re entering an entirely different world with different rules, and performers who are strange and magical, who inhabit an alternative travelling universe. And there such a rich history of imagery too. I’m so pleased that you included my cushions in your wonderful blog, thank you ever so much, and I hope you have a chance to take your little girls to the circus one day soon so they can feel what you felt xx

I hated circus when I was a child. I felt weird because all my friends were always SO excited about it. But I grew up with animals and was (and still am) very sensitive about their pain. I remember reading so much suffering and misery in the eye of a circus elephant. The tricks animals are forced to perform are unnatural and painful for them, and the care and treatment they receive is simply shameful. And I may be crazy, and maybe it will make me a bad mom, but I will never ever take my children to a circus that use wild animals.

Oops, I’m being vindictive… but this cause is so close to my heart. Today I absolutely LOVE circuses , but only those that don’t use animals ;)

Anyway, I love all your finds! They are all so sweet and adorable :)

Your perspective is so interesting, Clemence! When I was a child I never really gave much thoughts about that – I was (and still am a bit) way too naive. Maybe because the circus that I always saw coming to my little village where too small to have anything other than horses and llamas. Thinking of it, I’ve never been to a circus that uses elephants etc. So glad you shared your thoughts!!!
